History

1908    Started as a public reading room by the Women's Christian Temperance Union

            (W.C.T.U.) in the home of Mrs. Lee Miller on Main Street.

 

1913    Organized the Young People's Branch of the Library.  The first fund raiser was

            held by collecting and selling old newspapers and magazines.  Raised $133.00.

 

1914    Formed the Cooperstown Public Library Association.

 

1917    Charter issued for the Cooperstown Public Library Association.

 

1923    Received a new building on Main Street from the will of Mrs. Mary L. Boal.

 

1962    Alice M. Drake, librarian, applied for and received a $565.51 State grant to 

            be used for the purchase of books.

 

1970    Board voted to join the Clarion District Libraries.

 

1972    Became a member of the Clarion District Library Association.

 

1981    Lost state funding aid.

 

1983    Building books covered and building sealed due to the poor condition of

            the building.  

 

1984    Library reopened after extensive repairs were made.

 

1985    Began receiving state aid again.

 

1988    Purchased and renovated the Cooperstown Evangelistic Tabernacle building

            with monies from the will of A. D. Woods and a Samuel Justice Fund grant.

 

1990    State requires full time employee in order to stay eligible for funding.

 

1991    Jane Beach hired as "In Charge" person to satisfy the state requirements.

 

1992    Plum township became a part of the libraries service area.

 

1993    Library received it first computer through a state grant.  Internet access

            though Cosmos of Reno using WildCat browser software.

           

1995    Board adopted a new policy to charge a $.25 maintenance fee for videos.

 

1996    New computers and software purchased to fully automate the library

            using barcodes and scanners.
